Join Stephanie and Clarissa once again as they revisit last year’s adventures in Italy. This time we’ll be taking you on a tour through an incredibly beautiful Venetian palace, the Ca’ d’Oro, or House of Gold.

 

Over the course of this weekend workshop, we will lead you through the construction of a series of designs inspired by the geometries of the elegant Gothic façade and the Cosmatesque-inspired courtyard floor mosaics of this 15 th Century architectural gem.

During Saturday’s session, Steph will focus our attention on the stunning façade, which features a unique blend of Gothic, Islamic and Byzantine influences in a distinctly Venetian Gothic style. We’ll be drawing both pointed and horse-shoe shaped arches, as well as some elegant quatrefoil tracery motifs.

​

Then, on Sunday, Clarissa will be taking inspiration from the jaw-droppingly beautiful floor mosaics of the lower courtyard, designed and installed by Giorgio Franchetti in the late 19th Century. We’ll construct a stunning roundel design incorporating an interlocking weave of ‘cable loops’ with a pentagonal motif at the centre. Finally, we will draw a selection of tiny patterns for the decorative infills.

~ Materials needed ~

A drawing compass (and a second, smaller compass may also be useful)

30cm/12inch ruler, or longer if you have one

HB or 2H pencil, a sharpener and an eraser

Stephs Class ~ A2 paper 

A few sheets of A3 paper (e.g. cartridge paper, sketchpad)

Two sheets of A2 paper for the final designs

Optional:

Colouring media: pens, pencils, paints

Heavier watercolour or mixed media paper if you wish to paint your final patterns.
